Pastors Mid week thoughts

Pastor's Desk

Bicycles, Blessings of the Animals, and Breaking of the Bread. On the surface these three things don’t seem to have anything in common but when you dig a little bit deeper you can see, beyond them all starting with the letter ‘B’, that they celebrate God and God’s creation in different ways.

Bicycles: Bernie Dickneitte will be teaching the Sunday School class this Sunday on the heals of Ronnie Gajewski’s conversation about farming and Janet Hall’s conversation about basket weaving. These conversations have revealed what creates each of us as unique individuals created in God’s image with our varied gifts. This week will allow us a moment to be outside and learn more about how we can keep our body as temple through health and fitness.

Blessings of the Animals: The creation story teams with how God created the earth and the animals first and that God tasked us to care for them. Francis of Assisi was known for seeing God in every inch of God’s creation especially through the animals of the earth. We have an opportunity to celebrate the animals in our care and bless them.

Breaking of the Bread: Where do we meet people and really get to know them? It is around the table. And God does this in communion in the breaking of the bread and the pouring of the cup. We’ll be able to share this sacred meal with one another.

So come this Sunday to learn about bicycles during Sunday School. Come this Sunday and bring your special animal for a blessing. Come this Sunday and break bread with us during worship as we reflect God’s kingdom here on earth through God’s creation in all that it is manifested at First Presbyterian Church of Mount Vernon, IL!

Monday Meal:

Monday August 14th our mission team will be preparing a wonderful meal for friends of the church and new friends of the church.  It is open to the public through helpings of chicken and dumplings and all the fixings.  Invite your friends.  Invite someone who has not had a warm meal in a while or someone who's belly is full but has been seeking for the heart to be full as well.  The meal will run from 11am-1pm and is free for all!

Sunday School Kick Off:

August 20th: Sunday School Kickoff. Only 2 more weeks until Sunday School Kickoff and the blessing of the backpacks.  Bring your favorite school aged friend and their backpacks as we bless them as they learn and grow together this school year.  We also are excited to start a new curriculum that will explore God's creation and coordinate with the sermon series at church.

Eclipse:

Friends as we near the weekend of August 21st please be ready for a total eclipse of Southern Illinois.  Get your special eclipse glasses from local retailers to protect your eyes.  Also be aware that First Presbyterian Church is a Red Cross safety area and will be the first response space on Saturday August 19th.  If you are still looking for a place to see the eclipse Camp Carew is still looking for volunteers and / or spaces to rent out for the weekend that most hotels in an hour radius are sold out.  Let's welcome visitors as they navigate our area and be ready for a spectacular display of God's wonder through the eclipse.

Blessings,

Rev. Rachel
